The teaching model of 5E learning cycle was originally presented by an American education expert, Roger Bybee, in 1989. It is a kind of teaching strategy and curriculum model base on exploration. Five parts (Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, and Evaluate) comprise the learning cycle. As initial letters of five part names are all "E", the learning cycle was named 5E.The quintessence of 5E learning cycle lies in the "Explore"part. Students will understand the scientists' method of studying the nature, develop the ability of scientific exploration, enhance the understanding of scientific exploration and learn basic experiment abilities. Graphic teaching method means constructing knowledge system with illustrating knowledge in the teaching process by the connection of words, numbers and symbols based on the inner relationships in knowledge. Microscopic model diagram, mind map, concept map and dynamic graph can be used in chemistry teaching to make teaching process intuitive, simple and interesting. The examination instruction requires the students to possess the image information processing abilities as follows:express the process and result of solving problems using correct chemistry terms, words, charts, models and graphs, and give explanations. As new curriculum reform emphasize more on the development of students' image information processing abilities, all kinds of textbooks are well illustrated. Because the tests containing images cover a wide range of knowledge and well evaluate students' image information processing abilities, they are preferred by the experts of college entrance examination proposition. In this thesis, we studied three questions: how to perform the teaching model of 5E learning cycle with the help of graphic representation; are there any effects this teaching methods on students' image information processing abilities; if effects exists, what are the effects (mainly about image-drawing and image-analyzing abilities). After studying the theories of 5E learning cycle, graphical representation methods and developing students'image information processing abilities,we designed our experiments. Using the compulsory chemistry textbook version 2 of the first grade in higher middle school published by Jiangsu education publishing company as experimental materials, we studied and compared the effects of different teaching methods of on two parallel classes of the first grade using the teaching model of 5E learning cycle with the help of graphic representation. After several trials and adjustments, we gradually obtained the proper methods for our experiments. The results showed that the teaching model of 5E learning cycle with the help of graphic representation feasible in the chemistry teaching of higher middle school. The process included participation?exploration?explaination?extendatio?evaluation and graphic representation could be used in every part according to specific contents. Our results indicated that the teaching model of 5E learning cycle with the help of graphic representation significantly improve students' image information processing abilities,image-drawing and image-analyzing abilities. The students' participation degree was increased, exploring passion was inspired and image information processing abilities were enhanced.
