During 2001,China's eighth curriculum reform has been starting,under the initiative of this reform,the opening time of English is advanced to the third grade.Under this background,a new foreign English teaching method-phonics spread to China.Unlike the traditional international phonetic alphabet method,the core of phonics is "read what you see and spell what you hear.".This study,which selects two parallel classes,mainly uses the method of compare and experiment to compare the traditional international phonetic alphabet with the phonics.Through compare respective characteristics of this three dimensions-the phonetic,word and learning interest,this study is aimed at revealing the advantages and disadvantages of these two English teaching methods in primary school,it can further enrich the theory and practice in primary school.The first part of the thesis is the introduction,which includes the research background,research contents,research significance and research methods;The second part is literature review,which teases the development course and research status of these two teaching methods,and summarizes their respective characteristics obtained from the previous studies.The third part is the research design,in line with "everything from practice actually" and "student-centered" education philosophy,the author makes questionnaire in experimental area firstly to understand the basic situation of English teachers and students of primary school;Then the author designs the experiment scheme and makes empirical research according to the result of questionnaire.The subjects of this study are students which come from a primary school in Henan province.The experimental period which is divided into pre-experiment,experiment,andpost-experiment in 18 weeks.The fourth part is the data analysis,in this part the pre-test and post-test data are analyzed with SPSS software;The fifth part is the conclusion,the experimental results obtained through date analysis are concluded that:(1)In the aspect of phonetic teaching,these two English teaching methods have their own advantages and disadvantages;(2)In the aspect of word teaching,phonics is better than the traditional international phonetic alphabet;(3)In the aspect of learning interest,phonics is more suitable for elementary school students' physical and mental characteristics than the later.
