Experiments on "Learning by Chinese phonetic alphabet, Developing the precious ability to read and write", is a research on the teaching methodology to advance the ability to read and write in respect of the overall reform on language teaching on the mainland. Researches on the above experiments confirms the requirement of "Say-it-Direct " approach in Chinese phonetic teaching. It does not only help the mastering of "shengmu", "yunmu", tone and phonetic pronunciation, but also strengthens the overall concept of "yinjie". The fact that "Learning by Chinese phonetic alphabet, Developing the precious ability to read and write" can be used as a language teaching tool to advance the ability to read and write is attributed to the ability developed among students to say the "yinjie" directly. Scholars on the mainland have carried out researches concerning various aspects of the effectiveness of "Learning by Chinese phonetic alphabet, Developing the precious ability to read and write" and "Say-it-Direct" approaches. Research findings indicate that it helps improve the quality of students and the effectiveness is satisfactory. In Hong Kong, articles concerning recent researches on "Say-it-Direct" approach are only limited to junior secondary and adult teaching, those in primary school are void.Where the school-based curriculum prevails, this research attempts to borrow the successful experience gained through experiments carried out on the mainland about "Learning by Chinese phonetic alphabet, Developing the precious ability to read and write" and to apply the "Say-it-Direct" approach to putonghua teaching in primary 2 students in Hong Kong. The main goal is to experiment and conduct researches on putonghua phonetic teaching in primary schools in Hong Kong so as to improve the ability of students to say the "yinjie" directly and learn on their own.Research findings:The performance of students taught by the new methodology is obviously better than those by the conventional "liang-pin-fa"in terms of listening ability and the speed of reading out the yinjie. Although no direct relevance is shown between student performance and reading habit, the habit of using Chinese phonetic alphabet to read and recognize characters is better developed amongst students who are taught by the new methodology than the conventional one. It shows that learning Chinese phonetic alphabet by "Say-it-Direct"approach can advance the ability of students to learn on their own. The new teaching methodology does not make the learning of Chinese phonetic alphabet more difficult. The above shows that early learning of Chinese phonetic alphabet by "say-it direct" in primary two students within one year is feasible.
