Listening skill is urgently demanded for social work and international exchange in the present age. So far. the traditional listening instruction remains a problem for teachers in the new round of the high school curriculum reform. Problems that exist in the traditional listening instruction are generally summarized as fowling: the lack of listening analysis, too much emphasis on listening products and limitations of listening assessment. To solve these problems, the author attempts to put forward a plausible and systematical listening ID by combining theories of ID and theories of listening instruction organically. The essay introduces the history and development of ID theory at home and abroad, especially Smith & Ragan's ID model. Besides, five key issues of listening instruction are clarified and comprehensively researched.Enlightened by the framework of Smith & Ragan's ID model, an innovative listening ID model is proposed with three modules of listening analysis, listening process and listening assessment. After elaborating each module, an experiment starts in a foreign language high school to verify whether the new listening ID improves the traditional listening instruction. First, what should be analyzed before listening instruction? The listening context, listening task and listener should be analyzed before listening instruction. It is accessible to analyze listening context and listeners by making a questionnaire. and to analyze listening task through the method of content analysis. Then, how about the listening teaching process based on the application of Smith &Ragan's ID? The listening process is specifically described in a sample lesson. Finally, the test results prove that it does make the improvement. In this way. the three research questions are carefully answered in the course of the experiment. To conclude, five teaching principles are clarified as the implications. Although the new listening ID is tested to be effective, there's still room for improvement.
