The concept of “quality education” has been proposed at the national level since1980 s.After over 3 decades of transformation and development,remarkable outcomes have been achieved in implementing and practising “quality education” in school education.However,the importance is only attached to fostering students' scientific spirits in the education of senior high schools,which somewhat neglects developing students' humanistic spirits.At present,many social and environmental problems,in a sense,shall be attributable to citizens' lack of humanistic spirits.In senior high schools,the cultivation of students' humanistic spirits shall not be ignored.Instead,equal importance shall be attached to cultivating scientific and humanistic spirits of students,so as to be really helpful for all-round and lifelong development of students.This paper knows about status quo and problems of cultivation of students' humanistic spirits in geography teaching of senior high schools by performing a questionnaire survey on some students from three middle schools of Urumqi,making a comparative analysis of them and interviewing some teachers.Students don't fully understand humanistic spirits from several aspects that must be developed,including purposes of learning geography,resource-related ethics,environmental ethics,population increase ethics,national consciousness,multiculturalism and attitudes towards themselves and others.They fail to comprehend connotations of humanistic spirits from the geographical perspective,let along cultivating corresponding spirits.In light of above problems,the author puts forward some teaching strategies for promoting the cultivation of students' humanistic spirits based on personal teaching practices and experiences.These strategies mainly include developing humanistic resources,enriching teaching activities,optimizing teaching methods,shaping humanistic spirits,expanding extracurricular knowledge,integrating humanistic spirits into teaching,improving teachers' humanistic qualities and transmitting humanistic spirits.The author analyzes the relationships between these strategies and the cultivation of students' humanistic spirits.Besides,descriptions are made in combination with many cases,in hope of improving teachers' accomplishments and changing their teaching concepts,in order to promote students' cultivation of humanistic spirits.
