Competency is the most significant and deep-seated feature of an individual who can be distinguished from a person who performs well in a particular profession(or organization,culture),and is an individual's attitudes,qualities,and cognition and so on.The competency of applied talents in undergraduate engineering refers to the individual characteristics that can be measured by motivations,attitudes or values,knowledge or skills of undergraduate engineering talents.Undergraduate stage is to lay an important stage of engineering application talent competency.This stage of innovation awareness,the strength of innovation,its future work in the ability to achieve greater innovation results,plays a critical,and even decisive impact.This study selected 14 engineering professors from two research universities in southern China and 12 new engineering employees(undergraduate graduation,working time of 1-2 years)from two large state-owned enterprises in a provincial capital city in the northwest.Based on the grounded theory,this paper constructs the competency structure model of applied talents in undergraduate level engineering,and clarifies the influencing factors of the competency training of applied talents in undergraduate engineering.On the basis of analyzing the present situation,this paper puts forward the path of cultivating qualified talents of undergraduate engineering.The main conclusions are as follows:First,the competency model of the applied talents of undergraduate engineering mainly includes three dimensions: general competence,professional competence and quality.General competencies include interpersonal skills,learning ability,co-operation,information processing,adaptability,and practical ability to solve problems.Professional competence includes two elements: professional knowledge and professional skills.Quality includes motivation,attitude,character,engineering ethics.Secondly,the article analyzes the current situation of the cultivation of the applied talents of undergraduate engineering,and obtains the existing problems of cultivating qualified talents of undergraduate engineering: Lack of government and business support,the universities cannot clap with one hand;Inadequate engineering training,business practice gain a superficial understanding through cursory observation;The curriculum content is lagging behind,the curriculum structure design is unreasonable;Lack of teacher's engineering background,evaluation mechanism utilitarian;The internal motive of study is insufficient,the study atmosphere is not strong.Thirdly,draws four factors that affect the cultivation of the applied talents of the undergraduate engineering: Government factors,enterprise factors,university factors and individual factors.Fourthly,on the basis of the competency model of the applied talents in the undergraduate engineering,combined with the current situation of the competency training and its influencing factors,the author puts forward the path to improve the competence of the undergraduate engineering talents:constructing an open,flexible and diversified curriculum system,choose effective teaching methods,improve the level of teachers' engineering practice,create a collaborative training model,build a certification and evaluation system,play the role of government's macro guidance.
