Enhanced teachers' professional quality is widely regarded as a symbol of teachers' professional development.With the continuous specialization of teaching and significant increase of professional training for teachers,more emphasis should be placed on teachers' professional quality.Despite the fact that small rural schools serve as a special form and important component of rural compulsory education,it has not yet enjoyed adequate public attention.Adopting literature method,this thesis first investigates the makeup of teachers' professional quality and then,given the characteristics of small rural schools,divides the teachers' professional quality into three aspects: professional emotion,professional competence and professional knowledge.Based on a survey involving 20 small-sized rural schools in County Quyang where questionnaires and interviews were carried out,the thesis summarizes common problems affecting teachers' professional quality: while having a sense of professional identity,teachers also suffer from job burnout;their sense of job satisfaction and work overload negatively influence each other;their quality does not match required work ethics;they do not efficiently reflect on their classroom teaching,nor do they give enough attention to their students or adopt an individual-based strategy;their conception of teaching is old-fashioned and their knowledge structure remains to be improved.It may be the location disadvantage of rural areas and subsequent brain drain that have caused a severe shortage of qualified teachers and a weak sense of self-development.Therefore,the thesis suggests that teachers' professional quality be enhanced by increasing funding,bettering educational system and improving job status.Besides,suggestions are also made that teachers' initiative be promoted by raising life-long learning awareness,adopting a reflective approach and providing peer assistance.Following the new trend in teachers' profession development,this thesis satisfies the needs of New Curriculum Reform and also contributes to educational equality.Undeniably,the improvement of teachers' professional quality not only accelerates the development of small rural schools,but also guarantees that rural educationdevelops in an balanced way.
