Research On The Image Of The Stigmatization Of Contemporary Female Doctorate Students

With the development of education in China,more and more women began to receive higher education,and the proportion of women receiving doctoral degrees is also increasing.They are self-realizing,independent,they are talented and capable women,and they have their own careers.Despite of these excellent qualities,they are usually dubbed a variety of stigma,such as “UFO”(which is the abbreviation of ugly,foolish and old),“Extermination Nun”,“the Third Gender”,etc.Making them encounter a variety of unfair treatment in the aspects of their life,work and marriage.Being concerned for this group,the author take the group of female doctorate students as the object of study,and in order to make a detailed interpretation of the produce and the perception of the image of the stigma of contemporary female doctor,and the response for it.Firstly,the concepts of stigma,female doctorate students,as well as other relevant concepts,are defined on the basis of the review of related research at home and abroad.And then collected actual situations described by female doctorate students themselves,which include the basic situation,living conditions,mate selection criteria,and the attitude towards career and family,and compared with the image of female doctorate students shaped by the public and the media to reveal the present situation of the image stigmatization of the female doctorate students and analyze the constructing process and its coping strategies.Finally,in-depth analysis of the historical background as well as the social and cultural power that generates and formats the image stigmatization of female doctorate students is made.Studies show that though the public's and network media's description of the female doctorate students contain part of the fact,it is mainly of a derogatory,stereotyped,stiffness of interpretation,which is a kind of stigma construction for the female doctorate student.Studies also show that the image stigma of the female doctoral students is the result of double construction of social perception and self-perception,while the network and the new media have played a role in promoting the construction.Moreover,it is not spontaneous,but has specific historical background as well as social and cultural power.the contest of traditional gender concepts and Custom education with the ideas of modern gender equality;The universal conflicts between the factual role(which is the individual role expectations and role-playing ability)and ought to be the role(which is the public's expectations on individual role)of individuals in contemporary society;the prevalence of the mass culture of consumerism;and the substantive or imagined conflicts between various interest groups during the period of social transformation in contemporary Chinese,and so on.What is all keep the expanding and deepening development of the stigma generalization,and making the female doctorate students also to some extent become the stigmatized group,and become the object of consumption of mass culture.
