At present,the development of education has become a widely-felt concern of the whole society.People have come to realize that it is very important to improve the quality of education for which cultivating teachers with high quality is crucial.That's why teachers' development has become a hot topic in the educational circles both at home and abroad.Scholars have carried out a large number of in-depth studies and practices from different perspectives of view and dimensions.It can be said that the research concerning this field is fruitful.However,all the study in the field is still on its preliminary stage.As far as China's vocational education environment is concerned,the situation concerning the professional development of English teachers is even more disturbing and disheartening.As a result of the conventional idea of paying attention to vocational skills and looking down on cultural knowledge,English teaching in secondary vocational schools is usually ignored.Thus the English teachers' professional development in secondary vocational schools has been encountering great hindrance.Many teachers fail to see the orientation and opportunity of their own professional development.As one of the teachers,the author has a hands-on experience and feeling.That's why a decision was made to carry out a research on the professional development of English teachers in secondary vocational schools in North Fujian province.By means of a questionnaire,a survey was made in order to have a clearer understanding of the overall situation of the secondary vocational English teachers'professional development in the region,and the dilemma they face in the practice of education and teaching.Analyses were made of the influencing factors,in the hope of coming up with some strategies to encourage the development of English teachers in vocational schools.As this local study can be true to the actual situation of the teachers,the author hopes that this thesis will supply a different perspective for the research.This paper includes five chapters.The first chapter introduces the background,purpose,significance and the basic ideas of the study.The second chapter is literature review.It interprets and defines the basic concepts,cards and summarizes relevant research literature at home and abroad,particularly with a focus on the relevant theoretical basis including Teacher career development theory and Lifelong education theory.The third chapter discusses the methodology and analyses the survey results.The fourth chapter probes into some problems and suggests come countermeasures.Discussion and analysis are made of the dilemma of English teachers' professional development so as to come up with the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions which will promote the English teachers' professional development.The fifth chapter is the conclusion in which a summary is made and a reflection is given to point out the shortcomings of this study,in hope that this study will elicit further study in the same field.
