With the rise of China’s international status and its full integration into the global economy,English has become increasingly important to Chinese.Compulsory Education Standard of English Curriculum(CESEC,2011 version)explicitly stipulates that English is taught for humanistic and instrumental purposes, and the ultimate goal of English learning is intercultural communication. But the long-term exam-oriented education fails to develop adequate language skills to meet the standard. The holistic unit teaching method creates a natural and friendly atmosphere for students, allowing them to experience, cooperate, and interact when engage in learning. Moreover,it helps them comprehensively improve their oral skills and communication ability.Although many teachers begin to pay more attention to the holistic unit teaching in primary schools, few researches have been done on the issue. This study focuses on the following two issues.First,to explore the current situation of holistic unit teaching of oral English in primary schools by questionnaires and interviews.Second,to examine whether the holistic unit teaching is effective in improving students’ oral English by action research. The present thesis makes the following findings: teachers have not paid enough attention to oral English teaching at present, and students’ speaking ability needs to be improved.Although some teachers use the unit holistic teaching approach, the effect is not ideal. The action study on oral English teaching shows that the holistic unit teaching is effective in improving students’ oral skills and inspiring their interest, and enhancing their confidence in oral expression. As a result, students’ oral communication ability improves.
