The purpose of autonomous learning is to make the learners take more responsibility on the management of their learning,which is regarded as the ideal goal for education,because autonomous learning can help the learners get into the role of being responsible for their study.It is necessary to cultivate learners' autonomy.Reading is one of the four essential skills of language learning,which is of great importance in the process of English learning.It is very crucial to help learners learn how to improve their English reading ability and the best way to achieve the goal is cultivating learners' autonomous learning in English reading.According to the junior high school students' characteristics and aiming at the junior high school students' study status in class and after class,the author did the research on current situation of junior high school students' autonomous learning in English reading.This thesis tries to find out the junior high school students' reading awereness,the frequency of junior high school students conduct autonomous learning in English reading,what materials junior high school students commonly choose and what difficulties junior high school students may meet in the process of autonomous learning in English reading.Through the analysis of data,the teachers can adjust the teaching method in the future and guide the students to achieve the purpose of promoting teaching in the autonomous learning process.Under the instruction of constructivism,a questionnaire was used to measure a sample of 40 students selected from Guangna Middle School randomly and it was adapted from Pang's “Autonomous Learning Questionnaire”(2003).Then the data were processed with the Microsoft Excel Software.And some students were interviewed to get the real situation of the students' autonomous learning in English reading.It was found that the students could exert certain autonomy in English reading,while the degree of autonomy at the different stages varied.Generally they could conduct a relatively higher frequency of monitoring,but were less autonomous in planning before reading and they lacked the autonomy in evaluation after reading.In order to enhance students learning in autonomous learning in English reading,teachers should train the students reading strategies,such as self-management.The teachers should allow students to supervise their own learning and take more responsibility so that the students can improve their autonomy of English reading.
