Export Sophistication And Industrial Energy Efficiency

Industrial energy efficiency and export trade can have major effects on the quality of China's economic growth. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the export sophistication and the industrial energy efficiency of the provinces in China,and to explore the effect and internal mechanism of government intervention on the relationship between export sophistication and industrial energy efficiency.Further,the paper uses Super-efficiency DEA Model to calculate the industrial energy efficiency of the provinces in China during 2004-2013 under the framework of total factor efficiency. paper analyzes the characteristics of industrial energy efficiency in all provinces, and makes an empirical study on influential mechanism. The conclusion shows that a provincial export sophistication indeed has positive effects on industrial energy efficiency. Through the possible effects like learning-by-exporting and upgrading effects in global value chains, manufacturing enterprises have improved the local export sophistication, which significantly promotes the industrial energy efficiency. Further, it is found that the relationship between the export sophistication and the industrial energy efficiency has distorted by government intervention. First of all, the government intervention behaviors did not increase the export sophistication, in contrast to the inhibitory effect. Secondly, the proportion of state-owned enterprises in various provinces reflects the negative impact of the government policy bias. Finally, in the area of higher degree of marketization, the effect from improvement of the export sophistication of industrial enterprises is more obvious to the promotion of industrial energy efficiency. At the same time, in the eastern and central regions, the distortion effect of government behavior on the relationship between export sophistication and energy efficiency can be more striking.
