Learning from previous experience, the article attempts to integrate individual socioeconomic status, family characteristics, village characteristics and informal social support dimensions into the structure equation model of the choice of pension model for middle-aged farmers, and studies the internal relationship and the mediation role of informal social support in influencing path. Then this paper tries to find the evolution path of the informal social support and pension model selection, and provides a useful reference for the improvement of the pension system. The results show that:(1) informal social support plays a mediating role in the evolutionary path of pension model selection for middle-aged farmers;(2) the direct and indirect influence of the individual socioeconomic status, family characteristics on the choice of pension model are significant, but the characteristics of the village collective assets and the degree of contact with the outside world only have indirect effect;(3) the pension model selection of middle-aged farmers have 6 influence paths, including individual socioeconomic status ? pension model, family characteristics ? pension model, informal social support ? pension model path, and 3 indirect paths through the informal social support, an intermediary variable. Among them, the individual socioeconomic status has positive effect, that is, the higher the socioeconomic status, the more middle-aged farmers tend to choose social pension. But the effect of family characteristics is negative. The more the number of families, the higher the proportions of children, middle-aged farmers are more likely to choose family pension. Meanwhile, the effect of village collective economy and the degree of contact with the outside world are also negative. The more village collective economy develops, the stronger the degree of contacting with the outside world, farmers receive more informal social support from their families, relatives and friends, causing the strong will of family pension.(4)In these several latent variables, the maximum path coefficient value is family characteristics, showing that family characteristics are the main factors that affect the choice of informal social support and endowment model for rural middle-aged farmers. Finally, the article posts suggestions on improvement of the old-age security system for the farmers.
