Research On Sustainable Development Of Resource-based Cities

Between 1950's and 1960's, China implemented the strategies of industrialization to enhance economic development and revitalize the national economy. Under this background, most of the country's resource-based cities began to rise and grow. Currently, there are 262 resource-based cities in all country, accounting for about a quarter of the number of all cities. Resource-based cities rely on the natural resources, providing adequate energy and raw materials for national industrialization. They also promote regional economic development and increased the level of urbanization. But with the acceleration of industrialization, resource-based cities had faced the gradual many problems, such as depletion of resources, ecological destruction and so on, which slew down resource-based urban ecnomic development. In order to promote national economy, the government must attach great importance to the sustainable development of resource-based cities. At the same time, they should guide and support the academic study of this topic.This paper selects the perspective of evaluating the capacity of sustainable development of resource-based cities. At first, this paper systematically introduces the concepts and theories of resource-based city, sustainable development. Based on scientific and rational principles, evaluation system of sustainable development capacity is constructed, including 5 specific indicators, which are life-support, economic support, social support, technological support and environmental support and 24 indexes. Secondly, this paper use principal component to make an empirical study on Longyan City. According to this result, we can calculate and assess the sustainability of Longyan City. In recent years, capacity of Longyan overall sustainable development has been improving, but the mode of economic development, industrial structure, the level of urbanization and ecological environment should be improved urgently. Therefore, this paper finally offered some advice to further promote sustainable development in Longyan. Longyan shall focus on changing way of production, optimizing industrial structure, improving the level of urbanization the ecological environment.
