As the first lyric opera, its plot drew on a novel titled "Regret for the Past" which was the only one taken love as its subject by Lu Xun. Having been adapted strictly from the original, this opera is divided into five parts which are so coherent and well-organized. In the past two years, the public has been once again enchanted with "Regret for the Past" owing to rehearsals conducted in a new way. In the opera, there are five arias sung by Juan Sheng. This thesis is aimed to analyze systematically to the hero Juan Sheng on the basis of his sharp psychological contrasts before and after his marriage. Particular attention is paid to make an analysis of some aspects including vocal acrobatics on two different arias named "She Stole My Heart" and "Golden Autumn Light" which are so melodious that they are definitely necessary in vocal teaching as well as classical ones in numerous mega concerts. The arias are characterized by a relatively high pitch which can be treated as a great opportunity to get tenors well trained and further improved. In light of his own singing experience, together with a comparison to several relevant materials, the author discusses from the following respects, including melody features, musical structure and vocal acrobatics with a view to better understanding singing style, skill and characters portrayal. Furthermore, more is to talk about how to better perform those two arias and which skills are better to be used to cope with the aria by Juan Sheng during one's singing, with a desire to truly integrate theory with practice and act as vividly as the real hero does, especially in a detailed and complete way. Meanwhile, the author hopes that this thesis can be of significant help for the future vocal learners to grasp the music style comprehensively and systemically, express feelings of songs correctly and then extract the implied artistic value once they sing such sort of songs.
