Lin Xiyi's Study Of Poetry Art

Lin Xiyi was a famous confucian scholar of Neo-Confucianism at the last years of Southern Song Dynasty,he had created a large number of metrical poems,which had a very distinctive characteristics.Liu Kezhuang,who was a leader of the literary world of last Southern Song Dynasty,and Qian Zhongshu,who was a contemporary literature researcher,both gave a very high evaluation to his poems.This article mainly focuses on the artistic characteristics of Lin Xiyi's metrical poems by studying his academic origin,contents and imageries.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,this article includes three chapters,the last two chapters are emphases.The first chapter is about Lin Xiyi's lifetime and creation.He lived in Song Li Zong period,Neo-Confucianism and Jianghu academic trend co-existed,he learned the two toughts' strong points widely to create his poems.He was born in a scholarly family,studied from Ai Xuan school,he made many friends and enriched his knowledge,these impact his creating profoundly.He created more than 400 metrical poems,with various themes.The second chapter is about the imageries of Lin Xiyi's metrical poems.He indulged in Buddhism and Taoism,selected many Buddhism and Taoist imageries in poetry.He took diction seriously,selected the most natural imageries to show a clear and beautiful natural landscape,he was good at mixing theoretic into natural imageries,so that those poems were full of theoretic interests.He was well-read,chose kinds of cultural imageries to express a love of humanistic culture and a special flavor of enjoying humanistic life.The third chapter is about the artistic characteristics of Lin Xiyi's metrical poems.He emphasized the expressing of humanistic culture and spirit,so he liked to use kinds of literary quotations including ancient stories,Buddhist and Taoist phrases and legends etc.He regarded both theoretic and diction as equally important,mixed theoretic into poems,showing a thoughts-profound and philosophic characteristic.He learned from Huang Tingjian to break the traditional syntactical structure of metrical poem,used kinds of mutative structures,showing a fresh feeling.The antithesis was very neat and orderly,especially the use of function words.His language was smooth and delicate,he refined keywords,showed an elegant characteristic.
