The paper introduced a perspective of the author's experiences of pursuing an M.F.A degree in Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in the United States.It demonstrated the teaching characteristics in VCUarts,including the teaching structure,the evaluation of the degrees,and the organization of core courses,such as Seminar and Critique.Through the analysis of the different ways of teaching between VCUarts and China Academy of Art,the paper concluded in aspects of challenges for Chinese overseas students to meet and an ideal teaching method that may reach the harmony between both educational culture and cultural backgrounds,inspiring a way of thinking for the graduate education of arts and design.By comparing Chinese and American different graduate training methods,it summed up some aspects of most valuable American graduate education,through personal experiences,the author explored some challenges that Chinese students faced with American education and analyzed the reasons behind them,and also concluded that they cannot simply be selected and grafted due to different cultural backgrounds,educational environments,etc.Therefore,the author offered a perspective of "ideal teaching mode",hoping to contribute to the field of art and design graduate teaching in our country.
