Directional verb is a closed part of speech in Chinese,which is less but very important in modern Chinese.It is a difficult point in teaching Chinese as a second language,too.It is hard to learn for second language learners because its rich semantics and complex usage rules.This paper made a deep research on the nature of the compound directional verb "Xiaqu".This paper contains five sections.The first part reviewed the previous research about the directional verb and "Xiaqu" and pointed out the shortcomings.The second part defined the part of speech of "Xiaqu",and discussed its syntax,semantics and discrimination with its synonyms.Specifically related to which verb could be chosen when "Xiaqu" as a complement of verb,the object location problem in sentence which "Xiaqu" was contained,the semantic problems of "Xiaqu",and the comparison of "Xiaqu" with its synonyms.The third part studied the use situation of "Xiaqu" in HSK dynamic composition corpus and found that there were three types of errors the students usually made: the error of "Xiaqu",the error of other verbs and the error of the object's location.We found that students made errors mainly because “Xiaqu” is too difficult and the over generalization of the target language knowledge,at the same time,the negative transfer of the mother tongue,the influence of the teachers and the learning environment were also the reasons for the errors.The fourth part put forward six teaching strategies and four available teaching methods.The fifth part summarized this article and pointed out the shortcomings of it.It is hoped that this study can provide some help to the teaching of the directional verb“Xiaqu”,and also other directional verbs.
