The word "JIU" has different characteristics in modern Chinese speech.It can be used as adverb,preposition,or conjunction and each characteristic has a variety of meaning,that is why the word "JIU" is not only the difficult point in foreign students' Chinese learning,but also the key point in teaching Chinese as the second language.After a serious reviewing and checking in many related books and materials,this paper sums up the usage of the word "JIU" in adverb,preposition and conjunction in modern Chinese speech from the point of grammar construction.Each usage of characteristic has been divided in small groups and will be demonstrated on the basis of practice.Meanwhile,this paper also analyzes and summarizes the condition of foreign student's who's in intermediate and senior period learning the word "JIU" by the methods of analyzed induction and comparison substitution.According to corpora of Beijing Language and Culture University,the errors are divided into four categories which are missing,mis-adding,misuse and mis-order of"JIU",and every category is also divided into several types.The author analyzes the reasons of errors,which are negative transfer of mother tongue,over-generalization of "JIU" 's rules,disadvantages of textbook and shortage of teaching.And this paper also proposes some effective teaching methods,such as comparative method,situational method.Some advises are given to teachers,foreign students and textbook editors in order to help in teaching Chinese as a second language in China.
