Abstract/Summary:
Simultaneous interpretation has been preferred by many people for its high efficiency and time-saving.Listeners are more easily understand the speech if the interpreter’s output is fluency,which is a criteria to measure simultaneous interpretation quality.As an important factor to affect fluency,pauses is a phenomenon of disruption in the language flow.The improper pauses in SI generally occurs in the process of target language outputting such as audible pauses(filled pauses)and silent pauses(unfilled pauses).Too many occurrences of pause will definitely affect the interpretation fluency and even fail to fulfill the SI task.Using 2016 Obama Farewell Speech as source language,and taking myself SI exercises for example,this thesis mainly focus on improper pauses in SI and coping strategies of it.Making use of positive anticipation,language flow and speed adjustment,vaguely interpretation strategies to avoid improper pauses and achieve better fluency.In hope that this thesis can provide some references and guidance for English interpretation learners,solving real problems in interpretation via the coping strategies mentioned in this thesis,to better finish interpretation tasks.
