In recent years,the "Zi-based" theory is emerging gradually.The "Zi-based" theory takes "Zi" as the basic unit of Chinese language and the convergence of its phonetics,semantics,lexicology and syntax.So the theory has received extensive attention from the academia because of its theoryconforms with Chinese characteristics more.Although a series of achievements have been achieved in the ontology of the "Zi-based" theory and the methods of the teaching foreigners Chinese characters.But the combination of the two has not been put on the agenda.More concretely,the problemssuch as enhancing the interests and effectof western young learners in learning Chinese characters,arranging the characters systematically and improving the teaching methods,haven' t be solved.Accordingly the purpose of this thesis is to apply the"Zi-based" theory to the practice ofChinese character teaching in Dulwich College Shanghai as well as the children' sChinese character teaching,to make a teaching design of charactersof Easy Steps to Chinese(Volume?/?/?)under the guidance of the "Zi-based" theory and to demonstrate theprocess of using this design through an actual teaching case.The writer hopes to open theteaching ideas for textbook users in the future and to look for a multiple way ofcharacter teaching.This thesis contains six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,summarizes the research background,meaning,the content and methods of this thesis.The second chapter is the research background of the "Zi-based" theory.The third chapter is the pre-demonstration of teaching design.First the thesisanalyzes the source and characteristics of the teaching objectas well as the level of Chinese charactersand then it analysesthe capable of using the "Zi-based" theory based on the Chinese curriculum andteaching mode of Dulwich College Shanghai.Finally,it analyzes the sourceand characteristics of the selected materials.The forth chapter,the teaching design,is the main part of this thesis.It shows all theprocess of the teaching design in details under the guidance of the "Zi-based" theory,with Easy Steps to Chinese(Volume?/?/?)as an example.It includes how to organize characters of the text book,how to determine the core charactersaccording to character frequency statistics and finally how to determine selected characters for each lesson.The second part describes the principles and methodscarrying out the design.The third part demonstrates the specific steps of the example lesson Fruit and Vegetables of this design.The fifth chapter shows survey and the assessment of the design.It provides six evaluation methods to assess the effect of carrying outthe design,such as Character Distinguish by Listening,Write the Word by Picture,Synonym Discrimination,Phrase Making,Word Expansion,andGuess the Word in the reading test.Through the assessment to evaluate six aspects of character learning regarding to pronunciation,character shape,meaning,phrases,sentences and reading comprehension.The sixth chapter is the recommendations ofimplementation which summarises the advantages of the character teaching case as well as analyses the difficulties and problems faced by the character teaching by the "Zi-based" theory.The last partof thesis summarizes conclusions of the research.It also provides advices towards further research.
