Nathan Ackerman is a Russian psychoanalyst. He is one of the early representatives of social-cultural school. His thoughts are mainly influenced by the classical psychoanalysis, the social cultural school of psychoanalysis and the system theory.Among them, Freud and Adler are the influence of classical psychoanalysis, and the influence of the social and cultural school on him is Honey and Sullivan. He integrated the theory of social-cultural school and systematology into his own psychoanalysis theory.Ackerman was influenced by the control theory and system theory that was popular in the United States at that time. He absorbed the system theory into the field of psychology and regarded the family as a whole. In the theory of family dynamics,Ackerman believes that the family is a kind of relational context, is a complex system. The family has the function of enhancing the interaction process between family members. In the framework of system theory, all therapists need to work hard to explore the elements inside and outside the system. He put forward the concept of system, subsystem, boundary and so on. The boundary is the invisible boundary between the individual, the subsystem or the system. The boundary helps the individual autonomy of each member of the stator system, and also helps to distinguish a subsystem from another. He used the concept of family rules to describe the functioning and stability of the family system. Family rules determine how people behave in a way that he believes that the family will promptly revise or abandon the rules that are unreasonable, unscientific, and outdated. Only when these rules are abandoned in time and establish new reasonable and scientific rules, can the family members' mental health and the whole family function be improved in time. Due to the influence of the Ackerman, the United States also believes that the current social culture is a kind of economic success atmosphere. The free spirit advocated by the individual and the economic competition advocated by the social economy and culture have some contradictions. If an individual wants to achieve economic success, and has a wealth of satisfaction, it is necessary to give up in the competition for the noble spirit of the pursuit of individual morality, or even by hook or by crook. This makes the heart of love and the external success of the formation of a contradiction of three-dimensional.He also applied his family power theory to the practice of psychotherapy, which pioneered the psychoanalytic family therapy. From the two aspects of system and structure, he explained and practiced his family therapy theory. From the middle of the last century, Ackerman founded the Institute of family therapy in to provide psychological treatment services for many families in New York.
