This research explores the relations between public art as an art form and urban cultural identity.By analyzing the origins and development of public art,both in China and abroad,it scrutinizes sculptures,the most representative public art form in the urban space,as research objects.Furthermore,it explicits the crucial position which cultural identity takes in the discourses and compares Nanjing with other cities around world in terms of different urban cultures and the design,planning and innovation of public arts in the bigger picture of globalization.Taking a systematic approach,this empirical-focused research exams the public art of Nanjing and the complicated background,history and environment in which it dwells as a indispensable whole.It aims for the articulation of a public sphere which is saturated with distinct urban cultural identity,local culture,and is virtually residents-friendly.This research emphasizes on the immeasurable attraction which a civilized,open and lively urban public space can bring.Moreover,it argues that the attraction aforementioned is mostly generated from the distinct urban cultural identity and cultural character,which contributed as a crucial element regarding the urban synthesized competitiveness.
