Traditional sports schools refer to “those general primary and middle schools as well as secondary vocational schools jointly named by sports and administrative departments which have effectively implemented quality education, made achievements in school sports events, improved the physical health of students significantly, strictly employed national physical education and health curriculum standards, featured students' distinctive physical activities and developed at least two traditional sports items”. Traditional sports schools are classified into national, provincial and municipal levels. Traditional sports schools at all levels constitute the primary training forms of Chinese competitive sports system, which not only plays an active role in cultivating reserve talents for competitive sports but also promotes the comprehensive development of the moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic abilities vigorously. This paper has employed some research methods such as literature documents, field visits, interviews, questionnaires and mathematical statistics, etc to conduct a survey towards the current situation of 19 municipal traditional sports schools in Shapingba district of Chongqing. The survey is related to some aspects such as the project layout, faculty, student athletes, project popularity, training & competition, funding sources and evaluation of traditional sports schools. We have understood the basic situation and the main problems of the traditional sports schools in Shapingba district. We also have proposed appropriate countermeasures so as to provide a theoretical basis for the development of traditional sports schools in Shapingba district of Chongqing and some reference for the development of traditional sports school in other areas of Chongqing. The survey results are shown as follows: First, The traditional project in Shapingba district is mainly track and field, basketball and football, there is an unbalanced development of traditional sports projects.; Second, most traditional schools emphasize too much on athletic training and too little on the popularity to the public, which makes the campus competition for traditional programs unsuccessful. Third, the coaches for traditional programs are in adjunct by PE teachers in the school. Lack of high level coaches and receive less training opportunities. Fourth, the students' athletes are highly competitive, but their academic performance is poor. Fifth, the source for PE expense of the school is single, which leads to the shortage of PE expense; therefore, it cannot ensure the normal training and competing needs for the school team; sixth, the management of the supervisor departments for the traditional schools emphasize more on declaration and less on management. In terms of the main problems, this paper has analyzed the reasons and put forward the following countermeasures and suggestions: First, combine the setting of traditional programs with the competiveness and regional features of Chongqing and distribute each stage with relevant traditional schools. Second, strengthening the team construction of PE teachers and improving teachers' qualities and wages; Third, improving the management system of student athletes to address the conflicts between study and training; Fourth, strengthening the establishment of school sports culture and improving the popularity of traditional projects; Fifth, promoting the diversified teaching modes in traditional sports schools and increasing the funding sources of physical education; Sixth, improving the examination and evaluation system of traditional sports schools and strengthening supervision & management.
