Ordos plateau and its adjacent area is a special area where is embraced on four sides by mountains and three sides by water. Its special geographical environment with livestock breeding and farming makesOrdos plateau in historya conflict and confrontation area between the central plains dynasty and minorities. During Sui and Tang dynasties,this area was reunified and dominated by the central regime after Qin and Han dynasties. The study of cities'evolution and characteristicsin the study area of Sui and Tang dynastiesis conducive to understanding the managementand frontier governance strategy of the central government to this region. This paper explores the establishing and space distribution of cities, urban functions, hierarchy, shapeand the relationship between cities through the historical documents and archaeological data,and then probes into the development of urban system in the study areaon the basis of the preceding study, to provide certain reference to today's urban development in the study area. Finally,it will provide a little advicefor the protection of ancient towns in the study area, combining site preservation conditionon-the-spot investigation and cultural relic atlas.This paper mainly includes five parts besides preface:The first part briefly describes the sui and tang dynasties geographical environment and humane environment in the study area. Deterioration of natural environment in the desert in the study area is far from the current scope, farming and animal husbandry development are better; Humanistic environment, Sui and tang dynasties in the study area in the central unified management.the area inhabited by turkic, Uighur and tangut all the ethnic minorities.The second part according to the historical documents and archaeological data this paper discusses the development track of study area city of sui and tang dynasties. Relatively stable sui generation of city development, tang generation because of the change in the political and military dynamic city number have change, but has been in a growth trend. Summarized, its development trend and the central plains dynasty is closely connected with politics and national dynamic.The third part according to the second partto discuss the spatial distribution pattern of the city in this study area. Summarizes the characteristics and analysis affect the distribution pattern of natural and human factors.The fourth part discusses the city function, grade and shape in this study area. Pointed out that the study area in the city is given priority to with political and military type, according to the literature analysis of individual cities and other functions. On this basis, according to the political level, scale, factors such as the level of city divided into vast size. According to archaeological data, analyses the different functions and different levels in the study area the shape of the city.The fifth part discusses the mechanism of urban system in the study area. This section by urban transportation, military defense relationship between, on the basis of urban system in the study area, and usehistorical document, show the features of the urban system.Conclusion part, Combined with the cultural relic atlas and on-the-spot investigation, Found that the preserve condition of ancient cities is not optimisticin the study area, On the basis of this put forward some suggestions to the site protection.
