Since the 1960s so far, geographic information system (GIS) has emerged for more than half a century, and its applications are constantly expanding, with the development of information technology and the reform of teaching methods, geographic information system (GIS) has gradually been applied to geography teaching in middle school. As a kind of new information technology, its powerful spatial data storage and analysis function provides a new way for the middle school geography teaching. A new round of curriculum reform of basic education in China attach importance to the application of geographic information resources and information technology, and pay much attention to the cultivation of students’ learning skills and practical ability. So the application of GIS has an important practical significance for the curriculum reform of geography.According to the characteristics of geography and the functions of GIS, this paper mainly studies the application of GIS overlay function for the world geography teaching in junior high school.Through consulting a large number of literature, the author summarizes the domestic and foreign research of the application of GIS in middle school geography teaching, and sets forth the related concepts and the basic theory of GIS overlay function, and analyzes the application of GIS technology in the middle school geography teaching after the teachers in different cities answered the questionnaire. Then the author summarizes the application method of GIS overlay function according to the characteristics of the teaching contents and students’ learning skills and the application strategy of it for geography teaching in junior high school based on the teaching organization, environment, time and evaluation. Finally the author designs the teaching process according to the specific teaching contents.This paper makes a comprehensive study and analysis on the application of GIS overlay function for geography teaching in junior high school, and draws the following conclusion:(1) It is feasible to apply the GIS overlay function in junior high school geography teaching. The survey of the application of GIS in the middle school teaching shows that it is difficult for teachers to apply GIS in geography teaching but they all eager to use it. The majority of teachers think that it is feasible to apply GIS in middle school geography teaching.(2) GIS overlay function has its unique advantages in geography teaching in junior high school. And according to the characteristics of the junior high school geography teaching contents and the features of the students" learning, it can cultivate students’spatial literacy, underline the students’ learning process, and promote the reform of teaching methods.(3) Teachers should be familiar with the application method of GIS overlay function, prepare for the class. According to the selection of GIS software platform, the acquisition and storage of teaching resources, data processing and overlay operation, and the requirements for the teachers and students, the author summarizes the application method of GIS overlay function to make teachers sure that the method of GIS overlay function.(4) The author puts forward the application strategy of GIS overlay function in geography teaching basing on the aspects of teaching organization, the creation of teaching environment, the control of teaching time and the teaching evaluation. So as to provide guidance for the application of GIS technology in geography education. According to the application strategy of GIS overlay function, the author designs the teaching process about the "The United States" which is the representative of the geography teaching in junior high school.
