Critical thinking determines the quality of history teaching, and cultivating the critical thinking is one of the important goals of the history teaching, which meets the social development's demand for talent and helps shaping students' healthy personality. As a unique history teaching' method, the historical material teaching plays a vital role in cultivating the critical thinking. This paper mainly discusses how to use the historical material teaching to cultivate students' critical thinking. And its main content is divided into four parts.The first part mainly expounds the concept of the critical thinking and thistorical material eaching, including the connotation of critical thinking, the difference between the critical thinking and other thinking, historical thinking, critical thinking in history teaching, and distinguishing the historical material teaching from the historical teaching with material.The second part discusses the relationship between the critical thinking and the historical material teaching, that is, the historical material teaching is an important way of promoting the cultivation of the critical thinking. According to the connotation of critical thinking, the historical material teaching can cultivate the identifying ability,reasoning ability and pursuit of goodness, which can be further divided into many minor abilities and quality. Combined with the practical teaching cases, this part expounds how to use the historical material teaching to cultivate the critical thinking ability.The third part focuses on employing the historical material teaching in the teaching process to cultivate the critical thinking. Based on the operating process of the critical thinking, this part analyzes the corresponding teaching cases, which reveal the fact that the historical material teaching can cultivate students' critical thinking.The fourth part is a teaching design adopting the historical material teaching to cultivate the critical thinking. The teaching design of "Anti-Japanese War" aims for the subject being understood comprehensively.
