Reading itself is a kind of cognitive practice for students.Chinese reading an d learning is an important part that aims to enable students to acquire critical qua lities.Language reading engagement refers to the process of developing and inter acting with reading texts in terms of time,concentration,and participation,in ord er to cultivate reading literacy of primary school students in the context of the m other tongue language.In the process of continuous deepening of China’s basic e ducation reform,under the background of evaluation of international large-scale st udent literacy,how to understand and interpret students’ reading engagement is an important issue at the moment.The research is based on the student engagement theory and related achievem ents of PISA research to construct an analytical framework for pupils’ Chinese re ading engagement.The basic dimensions include amount of time,concentration,and participation.Analyze the main factors that affect primary school students’ reading engagement,namely reading environmental factors,teacher factors and reading initiative factors.Based on these aspects,we conducted a questionnair e survey of primary school pupils in the fourth and fifth grades of two public elementary schools in Shanghai.The study found that primary school students spend more time and attentio n on language reading and learning;primary school students’ language reading participation has individual differences;most students are able to actively read;reading environment and teachers play an important role in primary school st udents’ reading engagement.The study believes that by increasing the reading time with engagement sig nificance;using reading teaching methods and reading learning methods in a re asonable way;strengthening the learning of cognitive reading;maintaining a go od reading environment.The reading engagement is of great significance to the lifelong reading and self-construction of individual students.It also clarifies the concept of reading engagement and expands the research path for reading engagement.It takes a rational view of the reading environment and teachers’ support for reading an d their important role,and based on practice and reasonable demands.
