Promoting students' understanding of the nature of science(NOS)has become one of the fundamental goals of science education.The nature of science education is also the key to improve the scientific literacy of students.The study of the nature of science,as a hot topic of concern to educators,is supposed to be integrated into every aspect of curriculums.It relates to the requirements of NOS in the national curriculum criterion,the compilation of textbooks,as well as the selection of the teaching content and the teaching methods in actual teaching,in addition,there are teachers' conception of NOS,which have influence on the nature of science education,and further affect students'understanding of the NOS.This study starts from the high school chemistry textbooks,carries on the elementary exploration of the nature of science education into the senior high school chemistry subject.Based on the study of high school chemistry textbooks,the following questions will be solved:How much the content of NOS is present in senior high school chemistry textbooks?How does the content of NOS be arranged and presented in the textbooks?What is the completeness of the NOS in the textbook?What are the sub-connotations that are not involved?What are the differences between the three versions of Chemistry Textbooks in the content setting of the nature of science?The solution of these problems will help teachers to fully explore the contents of the NOS in the current chemistry textbooks,so as to facilitate teachers to carry out the nature of science teaching and promote the formation of the students' concept on NOS.On the basis of the domestic and foreign related literatures,based on the definition of the nature of science in the science of all Americans and fully combines the "standard of high school chemistry curriculum" in China,this study forms a research tool which is suitable for the analysis of Chinese chemistry compulsory 1 textbooks.The author quantifies and analyzes three versions of the chemistry textbooks from the following three main dimensions:the nature of scientific knowledge,the nature of scientific research and the nature of scientific enterprise.This study shows that:(1)The content of the main dimensions of the NOS is complete in the three versions of the chemistry textbook.And three versions of the chemistry textbooks are focused on the nature of scientific knowledge content.(2)Both in terms of quantity and distribution,Shandong Science and Technology Press's chemistry textbooks are superior to the other two versions of textbooks.It set the total content of NOS up to 238,much higher than the number of 196 by Jiangsu Education Publishing House and the number 166 by People's Education Press(PEP).(3)The chemistry textbook published by PEP is less than the Shandong Science and Technology Press and Jiangsu Education Publishing House on the number of nature of science content.But in the distribution of the three dimensions,the PEP is superior to the Jiangsu Education Publishing House.(4)The chemistry textbook published by Jiangsu Education Publishing House is more than the PEP in the number of nature of science content,but less than Shandong Science and Technology Press.And it doesn't have a good balance in the content of the three main dimensions.The content of scientific knowledge is as high as 56.63%,the proportion of scientific research and scientific enterprise is 23.98%and 19.39%respectively.In terms of proportion,the chemistry textbook published by Jiangsu Education Publishing House is too much emphasis on the nature of scientific knowledge and loses sight of the scientific research and scientific enterprise content.(5)On the presentation of the NOS,the chemistry textbook published by Jiangsu Education Publishing House mainly take the way of text-based,just the reverse,the teaching materials published by Shandong Science and Technology Press are mainly based on the combination of pictures and texts.The setting of the picture makes the chemistry textbook more vivid.In general,in the expression of the NOS,the chemistry textbook published by Shandong Science and Technology Press is of the best one and the chemistry textbook published by PEP is of the better one.
