State And Market:A Study On The Development Of English Cotton Textile Industry,1660-1850

This paper focuses on the rise of English cotton textile industry,a typical industry development process,from the perspective of economic history,using the research method from the theory to historical facts and then back to the theory.The aim of this investigation is to achieve some useful experience,through which we can promote the argument about current industry policy in China.Using the global-history analysis method,this paper studies the development of English cotton industry in the background of global interaction,expanding the analysis scope to Asia(mainly India),Africa,America(West Indies,North American Continent and South America)and so forth,and thus we can integrate agriculture,trade and production,to show the relation between different participants and areas.In doing so,we can have a better understanding of the industry's development.In the process of writing,this paper tries to make a comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting the development of the British cotton textile industry,so as to avoid biased.Explain the three main theories from the English cotton textile industry(the free trade theory;government industrial development strategy;national non planned market effect of direct intervention)the debate between the real historical process of investigation,attempts to respond to relevant theoretical arguments.This paper first introduces the early cotton trade,provide the original historical background for the development of the textile industry;then it reviews the impact of India cotton to English and the English responded,comprehensive consideration of the English national overall development strategy for the UK;after the introduction of cotton textile industry development process,analysis the influence factors of the play effect;then introduced the British textile industry gradually replaced India cotton to dominate the world market,the reason of the English cotton textile industry successful rise;finally draws conclusions.Through a detailed study on the development of the industry,and make a comprehensive analysis of the factors associated with the industry,this paper draws the conclusion:Free Trade prompted the English cotton textile industry successful rise does not exist,the English government from the beginning of the industrial development of intervention protection.The explanation of the UK government's unplanned market impact is more convincing than the interpretation of the UK government's special policy on the development of cotton textile industry.The policies formulated by the United Kingdom for the overall national development strategy promote the development of cotton textile consciously or unconsciously.The vast colonies and powerful sea power led English to the most important trade in the Atlantic at that time,which provided favorable conditions for the development of English cotton textile industry.The English government has formulated the policy to maximize its own interests as the starting point,is the implementation of the overall development strategy of England,the English government and the situation,seize the opportunity,the English businessman proactive,the courage to open up,which makes the English cotton textile industry was finally successful rise.
