Printing and dyeing production is a typical process industry with high energy consumption and high pollution,showing great potential for energy conservation,emission reduction and cleaner production.Clean Production Audit is an important way for printing and dyeing enterprises to implement cleaner production.The enterprises improve the efficiency of production process through improved plans,to realize the clean production target of "saving energy,reducing consumption,reducing pollution and increasing efficiency".But this method focus solely on the pollution control of a single enterprise,so that it can not meet the requirement of sustainable manufacturing.Green Design was considered the advanced concept to reduce environmental impact,ensure production quality and economic benefit in the whole life cycle.Therefore,it is necessary to implement green design for green production in printing and dyeing industries.Since research on green design is mainly concentrated on design and improvement of a given product,developing no mature theoretical framework on green design for a production process.This paper applied the Life Cycle Assessment to conduct a system-based improved design for production process of printing and dyeing enterprises.(1)We constructed an improved design framework for production process from three steps of environmental impact assessment,options evaluation system construction and integrated benefit evaluation.This framework was to identify the environmental impact among the life cycle and propose targeted improvement options,and then evaluate the options and select the best available technologies,so that the comprehensive improvement benefit of the enterprise would be evaluated.(2)The case study was proposed taking a printing and dyeing enterprise for example.The LCA of T/C printing and dyeing product from cotton planting to final disposal revealed that MAETP,GWP,ADP and FAETP were the most significant environmental impact types in life cycle of T/C product while the production phases with larger environmental impact values were printing and dyeing,cotton planting and textile in turn.Several feasible cleaner production options were proposed directed at the identified environmental problems and relevant causes.(3)Evaluation system of process improvement design plans was built from index levels of environmental benefits,economic benefits and product functionality,to evaluate and select BATs from feasible cleaner production options above.Finally,the BATs integration was formed with 6 selected plans.(4)Integrated benefits of the enterprise' production process improved design was evaluated from three aspects of environment benefits,economy benefits and product performance.The improved design showed high performance with clear economic and environmental benefits since the values of Resource Depletion,Ecological Influence and Human Health were reduced by 50.13%,50.08% and 7.65% respectively,and quality of the products have been greatly improved.We could draw the conclusion that the improved design framework we built was able to make up for the lack of clean production audit method and it provided technical support for enterprises to improve their green competitiveness.
