The Research On Public Space Of Southern Hunan Traditional Clan Settlement Based On Space Syntax

The rapid development and expansion of cities due to fast growing economy in China in recent years has resulted a more intensive situation of the inheritance and protection of traditional villages.Public area,as a structural element of traditional clan settlements,is an important place for the inheritance of those settlements' core spirits.This thesis studied 6 traditional clan settlements located at the south of Hunan Province,China,based on space syntax techniques.On the one hand,this thesis aims to use space syntax method to quantitively analyze those clan settlements,and comparatively research the visual language and field trip studies to find out the distribution law of public spaces,and fulfill the vacancy of quantitively research in the field of traditional settlements research.On the other hand,interpreting analysis results generated by space syntax method to unveil and conclude the characteristic values of traditional settlements in south Hunan region,and consequently develop new measures corresponding to the inheritance and protection of traditional clan settlements based on the research conclusions.The thesis introduced a new field of analyzing the traditional clan settlements in south Hunan region,which is its main innovation.The thesis consists of 5 chapters,including:Introduction,the first chapter,describes the background and origin of the following research as well as research subjects,definition of study range,objectives,meanings,and methods.This chapter sorts out context of existing researches,and introduce the frame of this thesis.The second chapter mainly describes theories of space syntax.Starting from the basic concept of configuration,this chapter explains the process of space syntax,from segmentation and deconstruction to establishment of interpretive models,along with research methods and values,and concludes the assessment standard for the following research.The third chapter is a study report of 6 traditional clan settlements.It integrates exterior environment,interior pattern,clan development history,and public space constitution,providing detail and data for our study.The fourth chapter interprets the space syntax analysis results of the 6 settlements.It contains images of analysis model,classification of different public area,and interpretation of original results.Finally,the fifth chapter tries to explore and interpret the generic type and characteristics of traditional clan settlements in south Hunan region,draw a conclusion based on researches above,and find potential characteristics of settlements to raise a discuss about clan settlements protection.The author hopes to enrich the studies of public area protection of traditional villages through space syntax analysis,raise attentions to our rural area's cultures,and aid future protection and inheritance of traditional villages.
