The conservation of historic conservation area is different from officially protected site. As living cultural heritage, it can only be restored properly if we maintain and promote its function, retain and sustain its vigour. But the utilization of some domestic historic conservation area pay no attention to their original motive, functions and characteristics. They are just treated as tourism products or scenic spots, which undermined their authenticity and value. The conflict between utilization and protection is evidently obvious, especially for the commercial historical conservation area. The utilization quality of historic conservation area will directly affect its protection. Therefore, the urgent problem we should solve is the way of protective utilization for historic conservation areas.Firstly, the thesis analyses the formation and evolution, dynamical mechanism and local characteristics of traditional commercial historic conservation area, including the problems in its utilizing; And from the perspective of the city overall, the thesis dissects its relationship with these elements, and the influence of its development concept and culture industry, by which the internal and external causes of the protective utilization is elaborated. Secondly from the research of the requirements of international charters, laws and regulations, the relationship between protection and utilization is clarified, and the evaluation criteria of utilization results is proposed. Then the thesis summarizes the way of utilization of historic conservation area from a lot of cases, sums up the experiences and lessons and proposes the protection principles and application methods. Some successful precedents in Suzhou is selectively analyzed, such as Shantang and Pingj iang historical conservation area. A conclusion is made that the key of protective utilization is reasonable industry support, incremental update mode and retaining the original tenants. Finally the thesis suggests some measures for protective utilization in historic conservation area, consisting of reasonable functional orientation, appropriate business operations, matching architectural use, and the use of protective security embodiments and related management, policy guidance and other support.
