Residential areas built in the 1980 s and 1990 s still account for a large proportion in China.Take Dalian as an example, residential buildings account for 19% of the total residential area of the current urban area in the 1980 s and 1990 s.Such "young" residential area for age are facing serious declines, and it is difficult to meet the needs of residents.Failure to renovate in time will result in large-scale slums or large-scale demolition, resulting in serious social problems, waste of resources and environmental pollution. Therefore, there is no delay in the environmental transformation of existing settlements. The National Conference on the Construction of Urban and Rural Housing on December 23,2017 proposed to use the ecological restoration of urban remediation as the carrier to improve the urban ecological environment, actively establish green cities and green communities, and attach importance to the sustainable transformation of existing settlements at the national level. However, the effect of the actual transformation of the outdoor environment in the residential areas is unsatisfactory. There are three reasons for this problem:.firstly, the object of transformation is unclear: As the architectural discipline lacks systematic theoretical research on the pathological characteristics of existing settlements and residents' needs, the transformation is lacking in pertinence;Secondly, the emphasis of transformation is not outstanding. There is no in-depth study on the necessity of transformation of outdoor environmental elements, and order of priority of transformation are not clear..Thirdly,the transformation is not sustainable: the sustainable development of residential areas involves comprehensive improvement of social, economic, and ecological environments, the current concept and technical standards related to the sustainable development of newly-built residential areas are already mature, however, there are relatively few relevant theories concerning the sustainable transformation of existing settlements.Considering the majority of unilateral transformation targets, the transformation goals and methods lack the consideration of sustainability. Therefore,it is the key to proposes a transformation method with strong operability, good results and the promotion to the current outdoor environment renovation of existing residential areas,by the diagnosis of pathological features in residential areas, and the quantitative evaluation of the outdoor environment through public participation. In this context, this article firstly investigated five typical existing settlements in Dalian and conducted a preliminary diagnosis of the pathological features of the current environment.Secondly, field observations, questionnaire surveys, and interviews were used to understand objectively and subjectively residents' satisfaction, use requirements and behavioral patterns. Then, through the necessity of the transformation of the environmental factors, the transformation sequence of the outdoor environment elements should be clarified, and the phased transformation target system for the outdoor environmental elements of existing settlements in Dalian should be established. On this basis, this paper first analyzes the main contradictions existing in the existing settlement reforms from a macro perspective, and proposes corresponding solutions;secondly,it draws on the theoretical system related to sustainable settlements at home and abroad, and applies them to China. The indicators for outdoor environmental renovation of residential areas are used to guide the construction of methods for sustainable development of existing settlements. Finally, based on the macro-strategy of residential reconstruction and the goal of sustainable development, this article establishes an system of outdoor environmental reform method to promote the sustainable development of existing residential areas in Dalian.
