In AEC industry,the phenomenon that project result is unsatisfactory due to the affection of project participators is often to see.From the perspective of synergy theory and agent theory,the project uncertainty,target consistency and trust among the project participants due to information asymmetry are the main cause of the problem.The design phase,as one of the important link of the project life cycle,is aimed to meet the demand of owner on the function and use,and guide the construction process smoothly.However,the design changes emerge in endlessly in the process of construction which leads to great influence on design efficiency because of the problem of asymmetric information and between project participants.Building Information Modeling(BIM)can help to solve the information asymmetry and coordination problems between project participants with its characteristics of visualization,simulation and coordination,which in turn improve the design efficiency.Based on the theory of synergy theory and principal-agent theory,the paper aims to study whether the BIM-based collaborative design can improve the design efficiency by reducing project uncertainty,enhancing trust between project participants and solving the problem of target inconsistency.Firstly,the literatures of BIM concept and its application advantages at the design phase are studied in this paper,which is aimed to identify what promotion the project participants can obtain from the BIM-based collaborative design,and the promotion factors are classified as owner,designer,contractor& supplier based on the project participants.Then the expert interview is carried out to screen promotion factors identified to find out which promotion factors of the project participants can help improve the design efficiency.Secondly,this paper analysis the factors between the project participants which may results in the decrease of the design efficiency,including demand uncertainty,technical uncertainty,target consistency and trust between the project participants.Besides,this paper analysis how BIM-based collaborative design reduces the negative influence to design efficiency caused by the project participants.Then the hypotheses that BIM-based collaborative design can improve the design efficiency by reducing project uncertainty,enhancing trust between project participants and solving the problem of target inconsistency are put forward,and the theoretical model is established.Thirdly,the actual data of projects is collected by questionnaire survey,and the theoretical model is demonstrated by structural equation model(SEM)and actual data collected.The initial structural equation is amended to obtain the structural equation with good adaptability.And correlation coefficient analysis is carried out on the results of model analysis to find out the factors and paths that BIM-based collaborative design improves design efficiency.Finally,based on the analysis of the key improving factors and paths,this paper puts forward six specific suggestions based on concept of Integrated Project Delivery(IPD)to improving the efficiency of BIM-based collaborative design.The suggestions would contribute to better application of BIM technology in architectural design field and effectively promote the further development of BIM technology and its application in our country.
