With advantageous natural conditions,the rigon of Three Hills(Xiang Mountain,Yuquan Mountain and Wanshou Mountain)and Five Gardens(Jingyi Garden,the Summer Palace,Jingmin Garden,Changchun Garden and the Old Summer Palace)in Beijing own a long history and many cultural resources,which is an ideal place for a garden.Rather than royal gardens,there are also many private gardens.Nowadays,most of research results centre on royal gardens,but private garden have got less attention than they deserve.This paper selects private garden in Three Hills and Five Gardens as the research object.On the basis of studying history and field investigating,the paper combines the research results of predecessors,and makes a comprehensive and systematic study on the spatial characteristics of private gardens by taking multi-culture as the entry point.There are three aspects about the influence of multi-culture on garden space.Firstly,different gardening purpose causing by different culture effects the site of Three Hills and Five Gardens in macroscopic view.Secondly,garden owners with different status have multi-gardening views,which effect overall layout characteristics in medium view.Finally,rich environment within multi-culture has effect space organization in micro aspect.The paper analyzes the influence on the private garden space through the exploring of the multi-culture.At the same time,the spatial characteristics of the private gardens are summarized through the layered analysis of the site selection pattern,layout and spatial organization in order to provide a scientific theoretical basis for the protection and utilization of private gardens in the region.
