The Inherent Mechanism Of Urban Compactness On Energy Efficiency And Its Empirical Study

At present,energy consumption in urban area which accounts for 2%of the earth’s surface occupies by 2/3 of the world’s total energy consumption.With the development of urbanization and the decline of energy reserves,the impact of energy efficiency on urban sustainable development is becoming more and more prominent.Based on the connotation of compactness,this paper analyzes the influence mechanism and practical path of compactness on energy efficiency from the aspects of population,economy,construction,transportation and function mixing.Based on the data of compactness measured by entropy method and energy efficiency measured by SFA model of 245 cities from 2001 to 2013 and combined with the level of industrial structure,economic development,scientific research and other control variables,the paper constructs the truncated regression model and dynamic panel model to analyze the practical effect of urban compactness on energy efficiency from the global,scale and regional aspects of urban samples.The results of this study show that:in a certain range,urban compactness has a stimulating effect on energy efficiency.At the same time,we should also pay attention to the coordination development of various functions of the city to maximize the effect of the city’s comprehensive compactness on energy efficiency.In the study of urban size grouping,the influence of compactness on energy efficiency shows the "U" type nonlinear trend and this effect is stronger in small cities and big cities.According to the analysis of the eastern,middle,west and northeast regions,there are obvious regional differences in the impact of urban compactness on energy efficiency.The urban compactness in the eastern region and central region is negatively correlated with the energy efficiency,and the urban compactness in western region and northeastern region has a positive effect on energy efficiency.In a word,the urban compactncss,to a certain extent,is conducive to promoting energy efficient,and influence effect is also different because of the urban city scale and regional characteristics.In the formulation of urbanization and energy management policies,we should adjust measures to local conditions,select the appropriate compactness valve to promote the improvement of energy efficiency,and take multiple approaches to promote energy efficiency.
