| Although the early-modern period of Peking occupied a slight percentage of the whole Peking history it made a great contribution as a historic transitory stage from ancient times to modern age.For instance,this period leaves its unique historical footprints on the style of modern enclosing walls,which results in a significant meaning.However,during the process of urbanization,these historical footprints suffer different degrees of damage or even face extinction.Thus,how to protect these influential historical sites has been an urgent topic.With the generation of enclosing walls’ new style,some issues become more and more outstanding such as directly copying the old pattern gives rise to its discordance with the style of surrounding architectures.These issues came from the superficial understanding on the aspect of the traditional culture,native culture and aesthetics.Thus,the design of enclosing wall’s style or even the whole landscape architecture plays an essential role in inheriting historical and local culture.The main aim of the dissertation is to solve the issues on these aspects.This dissertation uses the methods of the literature investigation and field survey to collect and organize the style of Peking enclosing walls.Meanwhile,it studied the development of three stages that are ’Wind Style stage,,’Traditional Renaissance Style stage’ and ’Socialism New Style Stage’.Referencing Morris’s semiotics theory,the dissertation analyzes the styles of the enclosing walls fromthe aspects of language form,semantics and pragmatics,thereby it draws the following conclusions:1)On the aspect of morphology,the dissertation analyzes enclosing walls’ shape formation,materials,scale or proportion,eolors and other characteristics.It comes to the conclusion that the styles of the enclosing walls not only need to satisfy the requirement of aesthetic,but also need to have a close relationship with its main body including landscape and architectures.Only in this way,the design can keep the consistency on the visual sensation.2)From the view of semantic,enclosing wall directly reflects city image by its strong meanings on graphics,indication and symbolism.Meanwhile,the style of the Peking enclosing walls shows city,s image of a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society.3)On the aspect of pragmatics,the dissertation analyzes the process of enclosing walls’ design expression and its context.It indicates that the styles of enclosing walls should show the local culture and history.4)Modem Pecking enclosing wall is a reflection of comprehensive conditions that includes society,politics,military,culture,and science technology in that area.It is a production of history and has important historical values.Therefore,we should protect the historical legacy in sustainable methods,which aims to ensure the continuation of its historic value.In conclusion,the style of the Peking enclosing walls experiences a complicated process to evolve.This processcarries such a big collision between Chinese and western culture.Under the exploration of designers,such as Yang Tingbao,Liang Sicheng etc,a new style that combines old and new elements together has been created.It has inherited the multiculture of modern Peking from a deep level,accordingly it could work as a model and guide our modem landscape design.The dissertation researches the style of Peking enclosing walls,which were created in early modern times,based on semiology that is a basic theoretical subject.Hopefully,it could provide a reference for other scholars in the future. |
