A maximum number of passengers that will gather or assemble inside the railway station building is an important factor and essential in the design and determination of the capacity or scale of the railway passenger station. An accurate calculation of the number of arriving passengers or prediction of their distribution inside the railway station building will help to optimize the layout of the service facilities and operation management of the station. The Republic of South Sudan is the world's newest country located in Eastern Africa. It gained its independence from the Republic of Sudan in 2011.As with many developing countries in Africa,South Sudan does not have an extensive railway system. The current railway line in South Sudan was constructed during the British colonial period. It is in a serious state of disrepair and consists of 248 kilometers of narrow-gauge single-track line.Due to the high maintenance cost of this line, the government abandoned it just one year after independence. At the same time,it proposed a plan to improve all of its national railway networks. The planned national railway network composed of three longitudinal and lateral railway lines which will cover the whole country. In order to successfully implement this project, the railway transportation planners were required to developed a method to estimate the maximum number of passengers that will assemble at the proposed stations of the planned railway network for future designs and operations. The planning process of these railway networks showed the cities and towns the planned railway lines will pass through but did not include any studies on the sizes or scales of the proposed railway stations. This thesis used an existing forecasting model to estimate the number of passengers that will gather at the proposed Juba Railway Station during the intensive dense arrival periods.Due to the lack of historical data of previous railway operations in the Republic of South Sudan, the original unit traffic generation method was used to generate the traffic attraction of passengers to Juba proposed railway station. The arrival time distribution of passengers determines when a single passenger would arrive at the railway station in advance. This study adopted the log-normal distribution function of the arrival time of passengers at Beijing railway station. To simulate the dynamic movement of passengers and their behavior while visiting the service facilities inside the station building, the thesis further formulated the passengers' flow line and proposed the design of the layout of Juba railway passenger station. The passenger flow simulation system was performed by the use of Anylogic simulation software to find the passengers' aggregations or densities at critical areas of the station which determined the adequate size of the station. The passenger's flow simulation system consisted of two modules:the station environment module and passenger's behavior module. The two modules are independent but associated with each other. In the station environment module, the main parameters are the type of queue, queue choice policy and delay time at the service tacilities. The second module is the passenger's behavior module, and its main parameters are passenger's arrival rate, initial speed, comfortable speed, and pedestrian diameter.Lastly, the case study on the proposed Juba railway station was presented in details. The results showed;the method proposed in this thesis could provide a reference for the estimation of the adequate size of the waiting halls of the railway passenger station.
