At present,Under the background of the global economic globalization and development of China's new normal urban transformation,a new pattern of urban system began to emerge, and the region is no longer a competition between individual cities, but gradually shows the trend of urban cluster development. As the main regional unit of regional development, the metropolitan area has become an important space carrier for accelerating the construction of new urbanization and promoting regional integration in China. The construction of the metropolitan area faces enormous development opportunities and challenges. This paper selects two representative metropolitan circles in China: Wuhan Metropolitan Circle and Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Metropolitan Circle as the research objects.Firstly, with 2000 as the time node, the correlation between the two metropolitan areas from 1980 to 2000 and from 2000 to 2016 is selected. The chronological data grasps the characteristics of social and economic changes by studying statistical data, and reveals the spatial evolution process of the two major metropolitan areas by analyzing spatial data to reveal the evolution process of spatial form.Secondly, selected the relevant current state data of the year 2016 in two metropolitan areas.Mathematical methods such as location quotient and industrial correlation analysis are used together with Arcgis spatial analysis method to reveal the current status of spatial structure in these two metropolitan areas. It described from four aspects—the central system, transportation system, ecological space and land organization. Finally, based on the above research results, the common problems and challenges faced by the two metropolitan areas are discussed. The spatial guidance strategy of the metropolitan area is proposed from the perspective of land space management and spatial pattern optimization. The results show that there are differences in both the spatial development process characteristics and spatial structure characteristics of the Wuhan metropolitan area and the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou metropolitan area. The spatial development of the Wuhan metropolitan area presents the process characteristics of “scatter distribution—single core agglomeration—axial agglomeration extension”.The regional development is dominated by epitaxial expansion, and connotative agglomeration is supplemented. The spatial development of the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou metropolitan area presents the process characteristics of “scattering distribution—multi-core open-network evacuation and continuous”.The spatial agglomeration and diffusion are more balanced, and the whole transitions from epitaxial development to connotation development. In terms of the spatial structure of the current situation, the Wuhan metropolitan area presents the characteristics of single-core structure of circle diffusion, axial emission and node dispersion. The SuzhouWuxi-Changzhou metropolitan area has formed multi-core structural features of three-heart radiation, corridor interweaving and network continuous.According to the abovementioned spatial development process and spatial structure characteristics of the two metropolitan areas, this paper concludes that both of them face the problem of insufficient urban system breeding, limited traffic network radiation, lack of ecological space network and disorderly expansion of construction land.A multi-center network system,a transportation system that creates a "corridor + network",a woven ecological space, and a space-enhancing strategy for strengthening the joint control of space. This paper studies the metropolitan area with different characteristics, broadens the thinking of urban circle space research, and is of great significance to promote the development of metropolitan circle planning theory and method.
