Underground space is a city resource with great potential. With the development of China's social and economic construction, urban land shortage, land price soaring, traffic congestion, green space reduction and other issues have become the constraints of urban development, while the utilization of underground space can effectively alleviate the contradictions of urban constructions.Meanwhile, the primary and secondary education in China has made great progress, bring the increasing requirements to campus constructions nowadays, including rising of student number, expansion of teaching buildings, and diversity of campus functions. These issues bring new challenges to the capacity of urban primary and secondary campus land use,but the expansion of campus buildings cannot be achieved at heights.Land shortage has fully impeded development of urban primary and secondary schools. Therefore, comprehensive utilization of underground spaces can open up a new way for primary and secondary campuses. It ensures land saving and create more functions and capacity, and also helps to alleviate urban traffic and infrastructure requirements, which effectively solve the development constraints of urban primary and secondary schools in China.Based on such context, the research focuses on urban primary and secondary schools, discussing the comprehensive utilization of their underground space. The research begins with basic theories and feasibility analysis.By studying current related researches at home and broad,it formed a basic theory summary of the subject. Then it demonstrated the feasibility of the development of utilization of underground space in primary and secondary schools from three aspects: China's policies and regulations, construction status and technical norms. The study of underground space construction in universities can be set as an example and guidance for primary and secondary campuses. On the basis of field research and case study, the uses of primary and secondary school underground spaces can be summarized as five types: the auxiliary teaching space, sport space, conference space, catering space and parking space, and then I analyzed their advantages and disadvantages and key design issues.Next,it discussed the design of utilization of underground space in primary and secondary campuses from three aspects, the underground space layout planning, underground space transportation and circulation and underground space humanized design. The layout planning emphasizes the integrality of underground space by layout design, program design and mixed use of space and resources sharing.Transportation and circulation design focus on the accessibility of underground space and meeting requirements of different functions,so as to promote the efficiency of underground space.Last, humanized design taking the physical and mental characteristics of primary and secondary students into account. With humanized space quality and humanized fire evacuation measures, the underground space is designed to meet the needs of the users and better serve the students. To sum up,the research is based on field research and sufficient case study, combined with practical project that the author has participated in,aiming the actual need and design difficulties of utilization of primary and secondary schools. It is hoped that this article can be served as reference for related project and research.
