The author of this thesis has taught and researched English of Marine Engineering(EME)for quite a few years and has found out numerous difficulties in EME teaching, one of which is related to the textbook in use.Based on the theory of Multimodal Discourse Analysis(MDA),the present research makes an analysis of the modal features in the current EME textbook EME(Operational Level)and puts forward some suggestions for compiling a multimodal EME textbook for the purpose of improving the teaching quality of English of Marine Engineering. The research subject of this thesis is EME(Operational Level)compiled by China Maritime Service Center. Both the qualitative and quantitative methods are adopted by the author to administer the questionnaires and interviews to some students from the major of Marine Engineering Technology and EME teachers from 31 maritime higher education institutions in China;and their evaluations on the modal features in the current EME textbook and suggestions for improving the aforesaid textbook are obtained. The conclusion of this research is as follows:The application of various modal features like color images, recordings, videos, animations, etc.is proved to be very helpful to the effect of EME teaching and learning. But the current textbook EME(Operational Level)has the following limitations in terms of the visual modality, the auditive modality,PPT and the online resources if viewed from the perspective of the MDA theory. Thus the author of this thesis suggests compiling a multimodal EME textbook abundant in color images, recordings, videos, animations and other multimodal resources under the guidance of the MDA theory, and applying the newly-compiled EME textbook to the teaching practice by designing a multimodal EME class-teaching model. This research is the first attempt of analyzing the current EME textbook EME(Operational Level)based on the MDA theory. It is hoped that the present research can provide some insights for compiling a multimodal EMT textbook in the future, and meanwhile can enrich the denotations and connotations of the MDA theory and improve the application value of this theory in the domestic ESP(English for Special Purposes)teaching.
