| World heritage West Lake in Hangzhou profound Chinese traditional culture has experienced a transformation from suburban public garden to the "Park City" in modern construction,especially in the 1950 s.By "Comprehensively Study the Soviet Experience" and "Actively Explore the National Forms" — a pair of contradictory ideological impacts,West Lake set a new practice methodology with the combination of "Practicality and Artistry".This paper focuses on Hangzhou West Lake’s "New Park" construction on the early 1950 s,since the founding of new China,use the documents,images,planning data and the oral interviews which reflects the landscape construction vividly and concretely by the influence of social ideology,to explore the differences between Traditional Public Gardens,Modern Western Parks,as well as Chinese Modern Parks and their multifaceted origin problems.Through the discuss of the following five topics,the diversified connotation of the West Lake’s modernization is restored from different aspects,in order to enrich the context of the development of modern Chinese Landscape Architecture,putting forward suggestions on the current Landscape Architecture Culture.The first part,"New West Lake of New China",focuses on the process of the West Lake’s three times’ "Parking-ization" in modern and contemporary times,pointing out the changing style from classical to modern in the West Lake’s construction in the 1950 s which also reflects a historical appearance of the social ideology and the concrete practice at that time.The second part includes two chapters,"Soviet Experiences" and "National Forms",which are two contradictory concepts in the construction of West Lake in the 1950 s.It was mainly embodied in the learning of the Western Landscape Architecture Model and the inheritance of Traditional Garden Culture,as well as the exploration of the New West Lake National Form.At the same time,the differences between the West Lake’s being as a "Modern Park" and a "Traditional Public Garden" are analyzed to explore the differences in social consciousness behind the New West Lake construction,which are explained from the connotation.The contradictions between cultural connotation and the forms to express are put forward as well.The third part,"Practical vs Art" and "Landscape Designer behind the Scenery",continues to focusing on the contradictory concepts mentioned before.With the vivid and concrete practice in building the New West Lake,problems of New Gardens Construction are embodied in "Production vs Consumption","Science vs Art","Professional vs Popular",as well as other binary dialectical methodologies,to explore the vital role played by personal factors in West Lake construction process,apart from National Consciousness and Industry Foundation,to present the three-dimensional appearance of 1950s’ New West Lake construction and the factors for the inheritance and recreation of West Lake to summarize the "West Lake Paradigm" that serves the construction of Park City in the 21 st century. |
