Cases Study On Functional Replacement-Type Renovation Design Of Traditional Dwellings

Due to the development of urbanization,the problem of hollowing out of rural areas in China is very serious,and the empty-disusing of traditional dwellings has become a common phenomenon in traditional villages.Traditional dwellings,as one of the important parts of traditional villages,results of stuggling with nature and being compatible with human life for thousands of years,which embodies craftsmen's wisdom,construction skills and traditional culture of the China.Being unrepaired and abandoned for a long time,which makes the traditional dwellings easier to damage,then it will be a huge loss to the excellent traditional culture.Among the large number of existing empty-disusing traditional dwellings,there are a lot of them well-preserved,but they cannot meet demands for modern life anymore,so most of them still have been abandoned.However,Traditional dwelling reusing is a sustainable-developing method,that can renew old houses,inherit traditional culture,breath new life into the village,and play a role in revitalizing the countryside.According to the historical value,use demand and functional orientation of traditional dwellings,the ways of reuse can be summarized into four types: historical-restoring reuse,comfort-improving transformation,functional optimizing transformation,and functional replacement renation.Functional replacement,that means,the function of dwellings transform from residential to others,is a common method of reuse recently,which not only enriches the existing functions in the village,but also brings more possibilities to the countryside,thus attracting people to come back and activating the village.This paper mainly studies the functional replacement-type renovation design,according to collecting and analyzing real cases that have been constructed in the past seven years.Firstly,the author classifies the cases from differet angels,then summarizes the current development of the renovation practice.Dealing with relationship between new and old is an unaviodable problem in each design.So secondly,author analyzes this problem from four aspects,improvement of interior comfort,reuse and renewe of original structure,optimization of spatial arrangement,collaborative application of new and old materials,inheritance of cultural and retention of memorise,then enumerates and integrates the specific and pratical approaches from cases in renovation of traditional dwellings,which can really provide other people efficient experience and help for latter design.At last,through the front chapters analysis and summary,it turns out that some approaches in different aspect are similar,and after further abstracting,we can find the “Drawer”strategy of renovation design,that can comprehensively solve and simplify problems from the comfort,structure,space,culture and memory,and also prove its feasibility by examples.The drawer-type strategy will provide more possibilities for design,as well cause some new problems.Therefore,it is necessary to treat the problem dialectically.
