The automotive industry is experiencing historic changes with the development of vehicle electrification, intelligentization, connectivity, and sharing. This industrial restructuring will expand the boundaries and attract new competitors to the automotive market.Meanwhile, traditional automotive enterprises should also seek a transformation to deal with these new challenges.A dramatic shift of the industrial ecosystem requires these enterprises to rebuild their core abilities to adapt to the new competition.A systematic research on the future competitiveness of the automotive industry is of great significance to forecast industrial trends and formulate enterprise strategies. Therefore, the key factors in the prospect of industrial restructuring are analyzed in detail. Then an evaluation model of future enterprise competitiveness is established.Based on the proposed method,a comparative study of traditional and new automotive enterprises is conducted to provide suggestions for different players.First, this paper compares the features of business innovations of incumbents and new entrants. The key factors in increasing value of automotive industrial value chain are identified, including research and development, manufacturing, marketing, maintenance, and usage. Then the synergy of design, manufacturing and services in the new era is discussed.Second, based on the comprehensive understanding of industrial restructuring,as well as multicriteria evaluation theories, this paper proposes an evaluation model of automotive enterprise competitiveness, including 14 first-level indexes and 40 second-level indexes from four dimensions: design, manufacturing, services, and their integration. It applies the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)method to determine different weights for all indexes,by processing the results of an expert investigation. Finally, this paper makes a comparative study on the competitiveness of traditional native enterprises, traditional international enterprises, and new automotive enterprises, based on an empirical analysis. The results indicate that in the aspect of design, traditional enterprises pay more attention to autonomous driving, while start-ups focus on improving driving experience. The incumbent players have advantages of basic manufacturing, and are also attempting at intelligent manufacturing applications. However, considering the service ability, new entrants emphasize better purchase and usage experience, but the transformation of traditional enterprises is still uncertain. Moreover, several leading China’s brands are building up their own capabilities to integrate the whole value chain. In brief, although traditional and new automotive enterprises have respective advantages, they also face many problems and challenges.Hence, different stakeholders need to cooperate and integrate with each other to explore effective business models in the future industry, and develop their sustainable competitiveness. |
