This thesis is a project study report, which includes a translation practice and a translation commentary. The text of the translation practice is an extract from "Dusk of Dawn" written by W.E.B.Du Bois.Based on the translation practice, the commentary part tries to illustrate the function of contextual analysis in translating autobiography.According to the three elements in Daniel Shaw's translation context which are source text context, target language context and translator, together with examples of contextual analysis in the text, this thesis aims to explore the function of contextual factors in translation practice by classifying them into those related to source text, target language and translator.Source text ones in this text are interrelationships between words and sentences as well as social historical background of the source text and the writer. They can be used in helping the translator get the accurate and proper meaning of a word and a sentence and making some implicit cultural information of the source text more explicit hence a better delivery of the source text.Target language ones,to be specific, are those with expression custom and target language culture context which can give a better treatment of the translation.Last but least, the function of translator's cognitive context in understanding implicit information in the source text and inferring the logic relations between sentences can not be ignored.Contextual analysis,of course, can not solve all the problems in translation practice. But its significant role in helping translators get the correct information from source text and deliver it properly can not be underestimated.
