On The Application Of U.S Foreign Language Learning 5C Standards In Higher Vocational English Teaching

To help American students improve their language competency and meet the demands of globalization of the world economy,ACTFL(American Council on The Teaching of Foreign Languages)designed and published Standards f or Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century which was described by five English letters with the same initial letter "c":Communication?Cultures?Connections?Comparisons and Communities.Since that,the 5C standards are widely used in the foreign language teaching in the U.S.It also played an important role in American foreign language teaching revolution.This research mainly discusses the differences caused by using the 5C standards and the impact factors with the means of observation and questionnaire survey.The application and influencing factors of each 'C' out of the 5C standards will be detail analyzed during the research,which will base on the result of observation and data from questionnaire survey.The study found that the students' English skills on communication and application has gradually improved with the teacher using 'communication' 'cultures'and 'communities' standards in the classroom teaching.However,little difference has made by using 'connections' and 'comparisons'.The reasons which contribute to those are the unique features of higher vocational college students and the negative effect of the traditional English teaching methodology.There are some limitation of this research,for instance,the range of study is too narrow as in one class unit and the communities in China is not perfect for the community activities.This study also suggests that 'communication' 'culture' and 'community' can be well used in the further teaching process.Meanwhile,'connections' and 'comparisons' need more and deeper research for better contribution to English teaching in higher vocational colleges.
