With the rapid development of economic globalization, the single basic strength English talents who are cultivated by general English teaching have been unable to meet the needs of our country’s international strategy, the applied talents who are proficient in professional business and have strong English communication skills are more and more popular and get high praise by employers, so ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teaching which is aimed at training students’ English communicative competence in the workplace has received wide attention of colleges gradually. The goals of our higher vocational English teaching are cultivate students’ English application ability and practical intelligence, and the educational thought of higher vocational English is competency-based teaching which determines ESP teaching will gain much attention in higher vocational colleges. Introducing ESP teaching in higher vocational English teaching can highlight practicality and occupational of teaching content, reflect the characteristics of higher vocational English, ESP teaching will become an inevitable trend in the development of higher vocational English teaching.In order to investigate the current situation of ESP teaching in higher vocational colleges and improve the quality of English teaching, the paper conducted a questionnaire survey which is based on needs analysis theory to the students of Jiangxi Tourism and Commerce College and Jiangxi College of Foreign Studies, and interviewed the teachers who teach the ESP course in this two colleges. The findings show that there are some problems in the process of ESP teaching, such as needs analysis deviation, unsuitable teachers’ level and knowledge structure, unreasonable curriculum, messy teaching materials, outdated teaching model and simple evaluation methods. In view of the situation, and based on the foreign effective experience in ESP teaching, the author proposed some strategies which are included:taking the new curriculum pattern "language module+ professional module+ integrated training module", strengthening the construction of teachers to promote the further professional development of ESP teachers, improving the construction of ESP textbook and developing the textbook which can highlight the characteristics of higher vocational teaching, using project teaching method, and establishing a diversified ESP teaching evaluation system. These strategies are suitable for the development of higher vocational colleges and helpful for the further integration of ESP teaching and higher vocational English teaching.Based on the related theory of ESP, the paper made an investigation to the current situation of ESP teaching in higher vocational colleges, it aims to promote the real integration of ESP teaching and higher vocational English teaching, and cultivate more compound talents to improve international competitiveness.
