Tones of the Mandarin Dialect are given in English and Chinese is a Chinese and English phonetic teaching material published in Canton in 1865,which aim is to link up the language betweern China and England.It applies to basic English learner from Guangdong and basic Chinese learner.There are a lot of linguistic things in this book be worth studying.This study on Tones of the Mandarin Dialect are given in English and Chinese will conduct from phonetics,grammar and lexis perspective.This thesis is divided into five parts:Chapter one is introduction,which introduces the research object,research meaning,research status and research theories and methods.What' s more,this chapter also describes the background and author' s information of this book,and introduces its applicable targets,the writing style,and its main contents.Charter two gives an overall analysis and introduction of phonetic marks of Beijing Mandarin.It reveals source and course relation and characteristics of phonetic marks of Tones of the Mandarin Dialect are given in English,through comparing with phonetic marks of Thomas Francis Wade and Robert Morrison.Meanwhile it notes that the Beijing Mandarin system recorded by Tones of the Mandarin Dialect are given in English and Chinese is not pure,through comparing with Yu-yen Tzu-erh Chi.Charter three analyses 18 mood particles at the end of sentence in Tones of the Mandarin Dialect are given in English and Chinese and evaluates them.Charter four studies 82 exotic words in Tones of the Mandarin Dialect are given in English and Chinese.Firstly explains their meaning,origin and translation method and then summarizes the characteristics of exotic words in 19 century.The last part is chapter five,which is the summary of this thesis.
