The present translation report consists of two parts:an E—C translation of an excerpt from Societal Contexts of Child Development and a critical commentary on what the translator has learned in the process of translation, including a summary of the translation techniques she has learned in the MTI classes and their application in the execution of the translation project to resolve the difficulties and problems the translator has come across in the translation. The source text Societal Contexts of Child Development is a book about the investigation of social contexts of children and suggestion of children's development. The excerpt is the sixth section of the original text. The difficulties and problems that baffled the translator are discussed in detail in the critical commentary that follows. As an important part of the theoretical framework of the present report,Skopos theory is drawn on for interpretation of problems that occur. It also serves as the basis of the techniques and strategies the translator has adopted in overcoming these problems.Skopos theory attaches importance to the purpose of translation and readers'reaction. Thus in executing the project, the translator has used such techniquesas embedding,reversing,splitting-off recasting and conversing in translation of sentences to make the translation more friendly to the reader;and in discourse translation, logic and coherence(one of the three rules of Skopos theory)are emphasized to ensure smooth reading.
